Somtrade Mombasa CFS is seeking a highly organized, ethical, and results-driven Accounting Officer to strengthen our finance department and support the continued growth of our Container Freight Station operations in Mombasa. Key Responsibilities
- Maintain complete, accurate, and well-organized accounting records in accordance with accepted accounting principles and internal financial procedures.
- Process daily financial transactions while ensuring every entry is correctly classified and supported by appropriate documentation.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for management review within established reporting timelines.
- Reconcile bank accounts, supplier statements, customer accounts, and general ledger balances regularly to ensure financial accuracy.
- Monitor cash flow movements and assist management in maintaining adequate operational liquidity.
- Verify supplier invoices, purchase orders, delivery documents, and payment requests before processing transactions.
- Prepare payment schedules while ensuring all approved supplier obligations are settled on time.
- Record accounts receivable transactions and follow up on outstanding customer balances professionally.
- Assist with preparation of departmental budgets, expenditure forecasts, and financial planning activities.
- Analyze financial performance and identify trends that may influence operational efficiency or business profitability.
- Prepare statutory tax computations and support timely submission of all regulatory financial obligations.
- Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, taxation regulations, and company financial policies.
- Support both internal and external audit exercises by preparing accurate financial records and responding to audit inquiries.
- Monitor operational expenses and recommend practical cost-control measures where appropriate.
- Investigate financial discrepancies promptly and recommend effective corrective actions.
- Maintain fixed asset registers while monitoring acquisitions, disposals, depreciation, and asset verification exercises.
- Prepare journal entries, accruals, adjustments, and month-end closing activities accurately.
- Generate management reports containing meaningful financial insights to support strategic decision-making.
- Maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information and company records.
- Collaborate closely with procurement, operations, warehouse, and administration teams to ensure accurate financial documentation.
- Assist in implementing stronger internal control procedures that reduce financial risks.
- Monitor compliance with approved budgets and report significant expenditure variances.
- Maintain accurate filing systems for accounting records in both digital and physical formats.
- Participate in financial system improvements that increase efficiency and reporting accuracy.
- Review freight, logistics, and operational revenue records to ensure billing accuracy.
- Support inventory valuation exercises where financial reconciliation is required.
- Respond professionally to finance-related inquiries from both internal and external stakeholders.
- Continuously monitor changes in financial legislation and recommend compliance improvements.
- Participate in finance meetings and contribute ideas that strengthen organizational financial performance.
- Perform additional accounting and finance assignments that support the organization's evolving operational objectives.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Applicants should possess a bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Commerce, or another closely related discipline from a recognized institution. Professional certifications such as CPA (K), ACCA, or equivalent accounting qualifications will provide a strong advantage. Candidates should have three to five years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably gained within logistics, freight forwarding, shipping, warehousing, transport, or Container Freight Station operations. Demonstrated proficiency in accounting software, ERP systems, Microsoft Excel, financial reporting tools, and computerized accounting applications is essential. The successful candidate must possess strong analytical thinking, numerical accuracy, budgeting knowledge, financial reporting expertise, tax compliance awareness, reconciliation skills, audit preparation capability, and an excellent understanding of internal financial controls. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, sound organizational ability, exceptional time management, and the capacity to prioritize multiple assignments under strict deadlines are highly valued.
