Job Description

A respected healthcare organization is seeking to recruit a qualified and motivated Laboratory Technologist to join its laboratory services team based in Lamu, Kenya. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical laboratory investigations on blood, urine, stool, tissue, sputum, and other biological specimens according to approved laboratory procedures.
  • Receive, verify, label, prepare, and process patient samples while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Conduct hematology, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology, serology, parasitology, and other laboratory examinations as assigned.
  • Operate laboratory analyzers, diagnostic instruments, and specialized testing equipment accurately and safely.
  • Validate laboratory findings before releasing results to authorized healthcare providers.
  • Maintain strict compliance with Laboratory Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements and institutional policies.
  • Participate in internal quality control activities and external quality assessment programmes to maintain testing accuracy.
  • Monitor laboratory equipment performance through routine calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Document equipment maintenance records and immediately report technical faults requiring specialized repair.
  • Ensure laboratory reagents, consumables, and testing materials are stored according to manufacturer recommendations.
  • Monitor stock levels and communicate procurement requirements to minimize interruptions in laboratory operations.
  • Observe infection prevention measures and biosafety protocols throughout all laboratory procedures.
  • Dispose of biological waste and hazardous materials in accordance with environmental and health regulations.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory documentation, registers, electronic records, and patient result databases.
  • Utilize Health Management Information Systems effectively for laboratory data entry and reporting.
  • Ensure confidentiality of patient information and laboratory records at all times.
  • Support clinicians by providing timely laboratory reports that assist diagnosis and patient management.
  • Participate in laboratory audits, accreditation activities, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Identify non-conformities within laboratory processes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist in developing and reviewing standard operating procedures where required.
  • Participate in laboratory meetings, technical discussions, and departmental improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor interns, students, and newly assigned laboratory personnel whenever assigned.
  • Maintain cleanliness, orderliness, and professional organization of all laboratory workstations.
  • Verify patient identification before specimen processing to reduce diagnostic errors.
  • Ensure compliance with all professional, ethical, legal, and regulatory laboratory requirements.
  • Participate in emergency laboratory services whenever scheduled.
  • Communicate professionally with healthcare providers regarding laboratory requests and clarification of results.
  • Maintain accurate turnaround times while ensuring analytical precision.
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous learning through professional development activities.
  • Perform any additional laboratory duties reasonably assigned by the laboratory management in support of quality healthcare delivery.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Applicants must possess either a bachelor's degree in laboratory sciences or a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution. Candidates should have successfully completed at least one year of internship experience within a recognized healthcare facility where they acquired practical laboratory competencies across multiple diagnostic disciplines. Registration with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB) together with possession of a valid practicing license is mandatory. Applicants must demonstrate practical knowledge of Laboratory Quality Management Systems (QMS), quality assurance principles, laboratory accreditation requirements, biosafety procedures, infection prevention practices, and ethical handling of patient information. Proficiency in computer applications, particularly Health Management Information Systems and Microsoft Office applications, is essential. Strong analytical ability, attention to detail, critical thinking, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work accurately under pressure are highly desirable.
