Job Description

Som Trade Limited is inviting applications from qualified, disciplined, and highly responsible professionals for the position of Safety and Security Officer based at our Container Freight Station (CFS) in Mombasa. The Safety and Security Officer will oversee the implementation of workplace safety standards, security procedures, emergency preparedness initiatives, and compliance programs designed to minimize operational risks. The role requires a professional who can identify hazards before they develop into incidents, investigate security concerns objectively, recommend practical corrective measures, and maintain a safe working environment across all operational areas of the Container Freight Station. Working closely with operations teams, transport coordinators, warehouse personnel, contractors, and management, the successful candidate will monitor daily site activities to ensure adherence to occupational safety regulations, cargo protection procedures, access control measures, fire prevention standards, and emergency response protocols. The officer will regularly inspect equipment, storage yards, loading zones, perimeter fencing, surveillance systems, firefighting equipment, emergency exits, and other safety-critical infrastructure to verify compliance with established procedures. The position demands excellent observational abilities, sound judgment, strong documentation skills, and the confidence to enforce company policies consistently while maintaining positive working relationships with employees and external stakeholders. Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and monitor all workplace safety and security policies throughout the Container Freight Station.
  • Conduct daily inspections of operational areas to identify hazards, unsafe practices, and potential security vulnerabilities.
  • Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, internal procedures, and company standards.
  • Monitor entry and exit points to maintain effective access control for employees, contractors, visitors, and transport personnel.
  • Verify compliance with cargo security procedures during receiving, storage, loading, and dispatch operations.
  • Perform routine patrols across warehouses, container yards, offices, parking areas, and restricted operational zones.
  • Investigate workplace accidents, security breaches, property damage, theft incidents, and safety violations while documenting findings accurately.
  • Prepare comprehensive incident reports, inspection reports, security logs, and corrective action records.
  • Recommend preventive measures that reduce workplace risks and improve operational safety performance.
  • Monitor CCTV surveillance systems and promptly escalate suspicious activities to management.
  • Coordinate emergency response activities during fire incidents, medical emergencies, evacuations, and security threats.
  • Ensure fire extinguishers, alarms, emergency exits, first aid facilities, and emergency equipment remain operational and accessible.
  • Organize regular workplace safety inspections and compliance audits.
  • Support implementation of emergency preparedness plans and business continuity procedures.
  • Deliver safety awareness sessions and toolbox talks to employees and contractors.
  • Promote safe cargo handling practices throughout warehouse and yard operations.
  • Enforce proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by all personnel.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with company safety requirements before and during project execution.
  • Liaise with government agencies, emergency responders, security providers, and regulatory authorities whenever required.
  • Maintain accurate safety registers, visitor records, inspection schedules, and security documentation.
  • Participate in risk assessments before introducing new operational activities or equipment.
  • Report maintenance issues affecting workplace safety or physical security.
  • Support investigations involving damaged cargo, unauthorized access, or operational irregularities.
  • Assist management in reviewing safety procedures and recommending continuous improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety requirements across all work areas.
  • Monitor vehicle movements within the Container Freight Station to enhance operational safety.
  • Verify that emergency evacuation routes remain unobstructed at all times.
  • Participate in internal compliance audits and external regulatory inspections.
  • Monitor contractor and visitor adherence to security protocols.
  • Protect confidential operational information while maintaining professional integrity.
  • Work collaboratively with departmental supervisors to strengthen safety performance across all operations.
  • Maintain readiness to respond effectively during emergencies while preserving order and minimizing operational disruption.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • The ideal candidate should possess a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or an equivalent secondary school qualification from a recognized institution. A professional certificate or diploma in Occupational Safety and Health, Safety Management, Security Management, Risk Management, Industrial Safety, or a closely related discipline will provide a strong advantage. Additional certifications in Fire Safety, Emergency Response, First Aid, Defensive Security Operations, or Incident Investigation are desirable.
