Key Responsibilities
- Prepare engineering workshops before every practical training session by arranging tools, machines, consumables, materials, and safety equipment.
- Support lecturers and trainers during practical lessons by providing technical assistance throughout laboratory and workshop activities.
- Demonstrate proper welding techniques while promoting safe engineering practices among students.
- Operate welding equipment, cutting machines, grinders, fabrication tools, and metalworking machinery according to approved procedures.
- Fabricate instructional models, training aids, practical examination materials, and workshop demonstration components.
- Repair damaged workshop furniture, steel structures, equipment frames, gates, doors, benches, and fabricated metal items whenever required.
- Conduct preventive maintenance on welding machines and engineering equipment to maximize operational efficiency.
- Inspect workshop tools regularly and recommend repairs, servicing, replacement, or calibration where necessary.
- Maintain accurate records of workshop equipment, consumables, spare parts, issued tools, and maintenance schedules.
- Monitor inventory levels and prepare requisitions for welding electrodes, gases, metals, protective equipment, and engineering supplies.
- Ensure workshop cleanliness, orderliness, and proper storage of machinery, tools, and hazardous materials.
- Enforce occupational health and safety regulations by ensuring learners wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Identify workplace hazards and recommend corrective measures to minimize operational risks.
- Assist in preparing students for competency-based practical assessments and engineering examinations.
- Support fabrication projects undertaken by the Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Department.
- Participate in installation, relocation, and commissioning of workshop equipment.
- Assist in conducting equipment inspections before practical sessions begin.
- Report equipment faults promptly and coordinate repair activities with authorized service providers.
- Participate in departmental planning meetings and contribute technical recommendations for workshop improvement.
- Ensure proper disposal of scrap metals and waste materials while supporting environmentally responsible workshop practices.
- Guide students on proper handling, maintenance, and storage of engineering tools.
- Monitor compliance with institutional workshop regulations and safety procedures.
- Assist during industrial exhibitions, engineering demonstrations, technical competitions, and departmental events.
- Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly workshop operational reports as required.
- Maintain confidentiality of institutional information and departmental records.
- Support implementation of quality assurance standards within engineering workshops.
- Perform routine inspections of fire extinguishers, emergency exits, ventilation systems, and safety signage.
- Coordinate movement of workshop materials between stores and practical training areas.
- Assist in budgeting for workshop materials by providing accurate consumption estimates.
- Perform any other technical duties assigned by the Head of the Mechanical & Automotive Engineering Department or institutional management.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Applicants should possess a Diploma or Higher Diploma in Welding and Fabrication, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Metal Fabrication Technology, Production Engineering, or another closely related engineering discipline from a recognized institution. Registration with the relevant professional body where applicable will be an added advantage. Candidates should demonstrate practical competence in welding processes, metal fabrication, workshop operations, equipment maintenance, and engineering safety procedures. Strong technical troubleshooting skills, sound knowledge of engineering tools, and the ability to interpret technical drawings are highly desirable. Applicants should possess excellent communication skills, strong organizational ability, integrity, professionalism, and commitment to quality workmanship. Experience using welding equipment, fabrication machinery, measuring instruments, grinders, cutting tools, and workshop maintenance equipment will be advantageous.
