Job Description

The Siaya National Polytechnic is inviting applications from qualified, motivated, and technically competent individuals for the position of Technician – Electrical & Electronic Engineering Department. This opportunity is ideal for a professional who is passionate about supporting technical education through the effective management of engineering workshops, laboratories, practical learning environments, and modern training equipment. The successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring that students receive practical, industry-relevant skills while maintaining a safe, organized, and productive learning environment. Reporting to the Head of Department, the Technician will provide daily technical support for practical lessons, demonstrations, laboratory experiments, workshops, research activities, assessments, and departmental projects. The role involves preparing tools, testing equipment, instruments, electronic devices, electrical machines, and laboratory materials before scheduled practical sessions while ensuring that every resource is functioning correctly and safely. The successful candidate will also assist lecturers and instructors in delivering competency-based practical training by providing technical expertise during classroom demonstrations and hands-on learning exercises. The position requires continuous maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment, identification of faults, routine servicing of laboratory instruments, calibration of measuring devices, repair coordination, inventory monitoring, workshop organization, and implementation of preventive maintenance schedules. The Technician will maintain detailed equipment records, prepare technical reports, document repairs, recommend replacement of obsolete equipment, and ensure compliance with institutional maintenance standards. The successful applicant will contribute to the development of modern learning environments by supporting installation of new laboratory equipment, assembling training models, configuring demonstration systems, and assisting in departmental innovation projects. The role also requires monitoring safety standards by enforcing proper use of personal protective equipment, ensuring safe storage of tools, inspecting electrical installations, and maintaining compliance with occupational health and safety regulations. Working closely with academic staff, the Technician will support examinations requiring practical assessments, supervise safe operation of workshop machinery, advise students on correct equipment handling procedures, and promote responsible utilization of institutional resources. The position also supports departmental research initiatives, exhibitions, innovation competitions, and community outreach programs whenever technical expertise is required. Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare engineering laboratories, workshops, practical classrooms, and demonstration areas before every scheduled training session.
  • Inspect electrical and electronic equipment to confirm proper operational status before student use.
  • Assemble laboratory apparatus, testing instruments, circuit boards, control panels, and demonstration models for practical instruction.
  • Provide technical assistance to lecturers and instructors during practical classes, assessments, and laboratory experiments.
  • Diagnose faults affecting electrical machines, electronic systems, measuring equipment, and laboratory installations.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment according to approved maintenance schedules.
  • Repair minor electrical and electronic faults while coordinating major repairs through approved procedures.
  • Calibrate measuring instruments and testing devices to maintain accurate instructional results.
  • Maintain workshop tools in clean, organized, secure, and serviceable condition.
  • Monitor the availability of laboratory consumables and technical materials required for practical training.
  • Record equipment maintenance activities, repairs completed, calibration schedules, and inspection reports.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records for tools, machines, instruments, spare parts, and departmental assets.
  • Recommend procurement of replacement tools, laboratory equipment, and technical consumables whenever necessary.
  • Support installation, commissioning, and testing of newly acquired laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure safe storage of chemicals, electronic components, electrical accessories, and specialized equipment where applicable.
  • Enforce laboratory safety procedures and ensure compliance with occupational health and institutional safety regulations.
  • Guide students on correct operation of electrical machines, instruments, and electronic equipment.
  • Supervise responsible handling of workshop tools to minimize misuse and prevent equipment damage.
  • Assist in preparing laboratories for practical examinations and competency assessments.
  • Participate in departmental innovation projects, exhibitions, engineering demonstrations, and technical competitions.
  • Support departmental research activities requiring technical expertise and laboratory preparation.
  • Identify equipment requiring servicing before failures disrupt practical learning.
  • Prepare periodic technical maintenance reports for departmental management.
  • Ensure laboratory workstations remain clean, organized, and ready for instructional activities.
  • Label equipment, storage cabinets, and laboratory materials for efficient identification and accountability.
  • Monitor compliance with electrical safety procedures during all practical activities.
  • Participate in emergency response procedures involving laboratory equipment when required.
  • Assist with departmental budgeting by providing technical equipment recommendations.
  • Coordinate disposal of obsolete, damaged, or irreparable equipment in accordance with institutional procedures.
  • Continuously update technical knowledge to support emerging engineering technologies and improved laboratory practices.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Applicants should possess a Diploma or Higher Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or another closely related engineering discipline from a recognized institution. Registration with a relevant professional body where applicable will be an added advantage. Candidates should demonstrate sound technical knowledge of electrical installations, electronic systems, laboratory instrumentation, workshop equipment, electrical machines, testing procedures, maintenance techniques, troubleshooting methods, and preventive maintenance practices. Practical experience handling engineering laboratories, training workshops, industrial equipment, measuring instruments, and modern diagnostic tools will be highly desirable.
